Oniwakakamaru

Birthdate: Unknown - 1189, Late Heian Period Oniwakakamaru, known as Benkei of Musashibou Benkei, was a retainer of Minamoto no Yoshitsune and held the childhood name of Benkei. He was entrusted to the Western Pagoda of Mt. Hiei's Enryaku-ji Temple, earning the name Nishitou Oniwakakamaru.

Legend has it that he spent 18 months in his mother's womb and was born with a full head of hair and teeth. His father, fearing that he was an unnatural child, tried to kill him, but he was saved and raised by his aunt.

As a young boy, he was sent as an acolyte to Kyoto's Mt. Hiei Enryaku-ji Temple, but his unruly behavior led to his expulsion from the temple. Later, at Gojou Bridge, he encountered Minamoto no Yoshitsune and became his retainer.

Defeating the Monster Carp

This is a scene from Benkei's life story. When Oniwakakamaru resided at the Western Pagoda of Mt. Hiei's Enryaku-ji Temple, a massive eight-foot carp in the Yokokawa Pond was terrorizing people by eating women and children. Upon hearing this, Oniwakakamaru took it upon himself to defeat the monster carp single-handedly, astonishing the monks.
